Learn How to Find American Civil War Records for Family-History Research

Carol Beauchamp from Fort Bend County Libraries’ Genealogy and Local History Department will present a special family-history-research program, “Researching American Civil War Records,” on Saturday, July 23, beginning at 10:00 am, in the Computer Lab at George Memorial Library, 1001 Golfview in Richmond. Beauchamp will show researchers how to trace ancestors who served on either side in the American Civil War. Learn how and where to obtain copies of compiled military-service records and pension-application files for both Union and Confederate soldiers. Databases such as Ancestry.com, Family Search and Fold3 will be discussed, as well as holdings in the Genealogy and Local History Department. The program is free and open to the public. Fort Bend County Libraries’ Adult Services staff at George Memorial Library, 1001 Golfview in Richmond, will present a variety of free, introductory computer classes this month. The classes will consist of a hands-on introduction to basic skills for people who would like to learn more about using these computer programs. • “MS Word Survival Basics” for version 2010 will take place on Wednesday, July 13, beginning at 10:00 am, in the Computer Lab. Learn the basics of using this word-processing software program to create letters, resumés, forms, and other types of documents. • “MS Excel Survival Basics” for version 2010 will take place on Wednesday, July 20, beginning at 10:00 am, in the Computer Lab. Learn the basics of using this spreadsheet software program, which features calculation tools that are helpful for financial and statistical needs. • “MS Excel: Intermediate” for version 2010 will take place on Wednesday, July 27, beginning at 10:00 am, in the Computer Lab. Understand this spreadsheet program even better by learning more advanced functions and tools. The classes are free and open to the public. Seating is limited, however, and reservations are required. Come spend time with the national award winning George Ranch Lariettes Dance Team at our Fall Lariette For a Day Kid Clinic! each participamt will learn a dance and will perform halftime for the GR vs. Elsik game on Friday October 28, 2016!  The cost is $30.00 pre-registration on or before Friday October 14, 2016 and $35.00 after October 14. Registrations are also accepted at the door ($35.00). Free Summer Movie Series @ the Library

Fort Bend County Libraries will feature a free Summer Movie Series at George Memorial Library beginning in July. The movies will take place at 6:00 pm, in the Meeting Room of the library, located at 1001 Golfview in Richmond. On Monday, July 11, watch a sci-fi adventure film about a Civil War officer named John Carter who is transported to another planet after encountering a mysterious medallion in a cave in Virginia. He finds himself being held captive by 12-foot-tall savage green men. Many of his earthly abilities are enhanced in the alien atmosphere, however, enabling him to escape his captors and become the greatest warrior of all time. This movie is rated PG-13. The special feature on Monday, July 25, is based on a popular Japanese Manga sci-fi novel. The movie stars Tom Cruise as Major William Cage, a futuristic soldier who is killed during a battle with alien invaders. Cage finds himself inexplicably thrown into a time-loop that forces him to relive the same brutal combat over and over, fighting and dying again and again. With the aid of a Special Forces soldier named Rita Vrataski, Cage discovers the secret behind the enemies’ ability to see the future and uses his unique situation to gain an advantage over the alien threat to the world. This movie is rated PG-13. The movies are free and open to the public. Children under the age of 12 must be accompanied by a parent or caregiver. The Transformation Center is looking for people who have a desire to serve our community and a passion to teach others their craft. That’s why, we have teamed up with Uvalle Construction for our first workshop. Together, we will empower boys and girls ages 8 – 12 as they learn the invaluable skill of carpentry in building a Masterpiece jewelry box. With over 10 yrs of experience, Joe Uvalle will teach and spark your child's creativity with physical tools while Miguel Quinones will inspire them with spiritual tools as he shares a transforming word. Transformation Center's vision is to equip our community both spiritually and practically. Our mission is to transform lives, mind, body and soul through the Arts and the love of Jesus Christ. Have you been searching for a job and not having any luck? Maybe it’s time for a change in your game plan. Fort Bend County Libraries’ George Memorial Library will present a free, two-part series of “Job-Search Survival Tips,” beginning on Monday, August 1, from 5:30 to 8:30 pm, in the Meeting Room of the library, located at 1001 Golfview in Richmond. The series will continue on August 2, at the same place and time. Different topics are discussed each night. The two-part series is designed to help all job-hunters, from those applicants applying for a position at a fast-food restaurant to executives looking for a position in a large company. The tips that are presented can help any applicant plan a more efficient job hunt and make a more favorable impression. Learn tips on writing a better resumé, researching prospective employers, interviewing and non-verbal skills, making a great first impression, networking, and much more. By developing an organized plan of action, the applicant is able to experience a more efficient job hunt with an increased chance of success. In the series, a team of 10 professionals, with decades of experience in corporate America between them, will share their insight and the experiences they themselves have had in the business world – from the perspective of the employer doing the hiring as well as the employee looking for a job. The job-search survival team includes business owners, financial and mortgage advisors, computer consultants, sales and marketing professionals, and advertising and communications executives – all of whom volunteer their time for this workshop. The sessions are free and open to the public. Registration is not required, and late arrivals are welcome. Summer Family Movie Series @ the Library

Fort Bend County Libraries will feature a free “Summer Family Movie Series” at the Albert George Branch Library in July. A variety of movie genres will be shown on Mondays, starting at 2:00 pm, in the Meeting Room of the library, located at 9230 Gene Street in Needville. Children under the age of 12 must be accompanied by a parent or caregiver. On Monday, July 11, library patrons will be treated to an animated family-comedy starring the voices of Adam Sandler, Selena Gomez, Andy Samburg, and Mel Brooks. Hotel owner Dracula is concerned that his half-human grandson Dennis is not embracing his vampire heritage. He and his fellow ghouls put Dennis through a “monster-in-training” boot camp, but their efforts are complicated by the arrival of Dracula’s dad, an old-school vampire named Vlad. This movie is rated PG. The special feature on Monday, July 18, is a recently-released animated, adventure-comedy movie. An oddball polar bear named Norm is outraged when he learns that a real-estate development firm plans to build condos in his Arctic home. Norm and his three lemming friends head to the developer’s corporate office in New York City, where Norm hopes to become the company’s mascot and thwart the developer’s Arctic plans from the inside and ultimately protect his homeland. This family film is rated PG. On Monday, July 25, enjoy an animated, adventure-comedy movie released in 2015. Boog becomes terrified after hearing Elliott tell a campfire story about the legend of the Wailing Wampus Werewolf that lives in Timberline National Forest. Boog “chickens out” of their annual summer-camping trip until he knows the werewolf is gone. Determined to help Boog overcome his fears, Elliott and the other woodland creatures band together to scare the fear out of Boog and ultimately uncover the mystery of the Wailing Wampus Werewolf. This family film is rated PG. The movies are free and open to the public. ESL Book Club to Discuss "Popped Off"

An E.S.L. (English as a Second Language) Book Club will meet at George Memorial Library, 1001 Golfview in Richmond, on Thursday, August 4, from 10:00 to 11:00 am, in the Adult Services Learning Lab on the first floor of the library. The book to be discussed is Popped Off, written by Jeffrey Allen. This monthly book club is for adults whose native language is not English, who enjoy reading, and who would like an opportunity to practice their English reading and conversational skills in a relaxed setting with other like-minded individuals. One book will be selected to read each month, and members will discuss the story in English at the book-club meeting. The book club meets on the first Thursday of every month. Copies of the book are available at the Literacy Services office in the Adult Services department of the library. The book club is free and open to the public. The Literacy Services department at Fort Bend County Libraries will have introductory ESL (English-as-a-Second-Language) computer classes in July for adults who would like to learn how to speak English and improve their computer skills. Presented in English, each class is designed to improve English-speaking, reading and writing abilities while teaching basic computer skills. The classes will take place from 10:00 am to 12:00 noon, in the Computer Lab at George Memorial Library, 1001 Golfview in Richmond. The schedule is as follows: • August 12 – Introduction to Computers and the Internet for English-Language Learners. The class provides a basic introduction to using computers and the World Wide Web. • August 26 – Introduction to MS Excel for English-Language Learners.
